Red Cedar

Juniperus virginiana

This tree, which can be found all over the state, is an evergreen that starts the season with a coat of gold from its tiny flower then as it develops is highlighted by its shift from green to blue. The Red Cedar can grow over 10 feet tall and may be the food for choice for birds at the shore. Its been documented that up to 68 species take advantage of this tree's fruit, more that any other beach plant. Its dense evergreen foliage can also provide welcome shelter to birds during the winter months. As a landscape plant it may be difficult to establish.
